Saudi Arabia has announced an initiative to invest USD 100 bn in new renewable projects over the next years.

Saudi Arabia plans to attract about $109 billion in solar investments to generate a third of its electricity by 2032, or about 41,000 megawatts. It currently has about 3 megawatts of solar installations, trailing Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and the U.A.E., according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Mitsubishi buys into German grid

Japanese group Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) has sealed two deals to buy into German offshore wind grid-connections, with a total investment of €576m ($765m), in a boost for the sector.

Mitsubishi has closed its agreement with transmission system operator (TSO) TenneT on the high-voltage cable projects BorWin1 and BorWin2, in which it will take a stake of 49% for €240m.

INTPOW wins top press prize at ONS 2012

INTPOW won the ONS 2012 Roger Vielvoye Memorial Award on Thursday, August 30, 2012. Managing Director Geir Elsebutangen accepted the award from Darius Snieckus, technology editor of Recharge. The Vielvoye committee was impressed by INTPOW's spearheading this year of two high-level seminars: one looking at development of the offshore wind power sector based on technology transfer from Norway's long-standing oil and gas industry - the other at the financing of future renewable energy projects," said Snieckus.

First resented in 1994, the Roger Vielvoye memorial Award commemorates a leading energy sector journalist, and was instituted by his colleagues in the press.

Innotech Solar delivers over 13,000 solar modules to the solar park in Nauen near Berlin, Germany. With an annual electricity production of 3.1 million KWh, it will supply energy to approx. 800 households.

Det er både billigere og renere enn gasskraftverk til havs.

It is a desktop analysis which through a systematic approach provides an insight into key aspects related to the market for upgrading and refurbishment of hydropower. Crown Estate organising wind supply chain events in the UK

UK’s Crown Estate, the UK offshore wind regulator, is again, in cooperation with regional industrial development organisations, organising offshore wind supply chain events throughout the UK. The events are in general very crowded and excellent arenas to meet local and regional UK businesses with strategies in offshore wind. At the same time, update information will be freely distributed by high level speakers. INTPOW has participated earlier and highly recommends it, also as a venue to review potential partners. INTPOW partner, Innotech Solar appoints former Suntech executive David Hogg to CEO role

Innotech Solar (ITS), INTPOW partner since 2009, and CEO Thor-Christian Tuv have decided to part ways after identifying differing opinions on the company’s future growth and expansion. The company’s board is now focusing on creating a new long-term growth strategy to meet the dynamic challenges of the photovoltaic industry. The ITS board views the introduction of new skills and expertise as an important priority, and has appointed David Hogg to the role of CEO at Innotech Solar with immediate effect.

 

Large-Scale Solar Project commissioned in Spain

INTPOW partner, Innotech Solar, commissioned one of Spain’s largest solar power stations last Friday. The installation – which has an output of 4.3 megawatt peak (MWp) –is constructed on several greenhouses, where trees are being cultivated for a local forestation project in an area measuring 62,000 m². The solar power station will produce 6 MWh of energy per year, enabling it to supply approximately 2,500 households.

Report about the Norwegian Energy Industry

INTPOW has for the third time released the report «The Norwegian Cleantech Industry – Statistics». Menon Business Economics was commissioned by INTPOW to produce the report by charting the current status and development of the sector. In short, 1,784 Norwegian businesses were surveyed, which reported total revenues of NOK 195 billion in 2010 and a total of NOK 71 billion in value added. Export sales were calculated to NOK 23 billion, making this industry the eighth largest in Norway.

The industry faced some setbacks during the financial crisis in 2009, but most segments started to grow again in 2010. Hydropower is by far the largest industry group measured in terms of value added, standing for 57 out of 71 billion NOK in 2010. The cleantech industry employed around 47,000 people in Norway in 2010.

The report was made public at INTPOWs partner meeting on February 15, 2012.

Scatec Solar AS to secure further cash

The INTPOW partner, Scatec Solar AS, is securing further cash through an agreed the sale of a 9MW portfolio of operating solar PV plants in Italy to an investment fund managed by London-based Impax Asset Management Ltd.

Norges satsing på havmøller må ses på som industriutvikling og ikke som noe forsøk på å sikre landet mer fornybar energi, mener Norsk Industris administrerende direktør Stein Lier-Hansen.

Last week, REC announced that the company will make further cuts to its solar wafer production in Norway, temporarily halting 50% of its capacity at the Glomfjord monocrystalline wafer plant during the first quarter of 2012.

Aibel utvider for vind

Aibel øker staben til 150, sier sjef for Aibels ingeniøravdeling i Haugesund, Tove Lise Storrø. I tillegg til nylig påstartede Dolwin 2, en leveranse til havområdet utenfor Helgoland i Tyskland, regner Aibels toppsjef i Haugesund, Bjørn Tollefsen, med at Aibel har gode sjanser til å vinna kontrakten også for Dolwin 3.

Meet Chinese NTNU-students who are interested in working with Norwegian companies

Scatec Solar wins 75 MW of PV in first phase of South African allocation tender

Scatec Solar, the global developer and turn-key supplier of solar PV (photo voltaic) solutions and an INTPOW partner, has been selected as a preferred bidder for a 75 MW project during the first round of the South African Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Program. A PV plant of this size will be amongst the largest to date in Africa. Construction will commence by July 2012 and the plant will be in commercial operation by August 2013.

Statoil seeks US lease off Maine for pilot Hywind floater project

Slowly, the next phase of the Hywind adventure is approaching. Statoil’s North America unit has now submitted a commercial lease application for waters off the US state of Maine, where it hopes to deploy four “optimised” versions of its Hywind floating wind turbine. We believe that the Scottish license applications for a wider prototype wind park might be around the corner. Will we see commercial floating wind parks inaugurated before 2020?

Tore Engevik has been appointed director of Aibel's new business area, Wind. He will continue working in Vestavind offshore until next spring. Anne-Grete Ellingsen (57) will serve as acting CEO of Vestavind Offshore when Engevik leaves.

Seajacks Leviathan to Join Statoil and Statkraft’s Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm (UK)

A replacement wind turbine installation vessel will arrive on site at the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm in February to help reduce delays to the 317MW project’s forecast schedule following a period of unseasonally poor weather. The original completion date of early 2012 is now revised to mid 2012 with expectations high with this new capacity. Go Statoil, go!

NORWIND INSTALLER AND ULSTEIN TEAM UP FOR OFFSHORE WIND FOUNDATION INSTALLATION VESSEL

Norwegian based NorWind Installer contracted the ULSTEIN Dutch design offices Ulstein Sea of Solutions and Ulstein IDEA Equipment Solutions as their design partners for a new foundation installation vessel for the offshore wind industry. The vessel is a customized version of the Deepwater Enabler design from ULSTEIN.

Innotech Solar Expands Activities in Asia: Warehouse Hub Established in Hongkong

On 25th March the Government Guesthouse in Parkveien was the venue for a meeting between a official delegation from Georgia and a selection of Norwegian energy industry representatives. The delegation was headed by the Georgian Foreign Minister Mr. Grigol Vashadze accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Energy Mr. David Kereselidze.

Big plans for hydropower in Ethiopia

The International Hydropower Association(IHA) invited the hydropower community to Addis Ababa for the conference “Hydropower for Sustainable Development 2011”, more than 200 representatives from governments and industry attended.

2nd Offshore Wind Supply Chain Conference

On the 22nd of March, INTPOW organised its second Offshore Wind Supply Chain Conference at Felix Conference Centre at Aker Brygge in Oslo. Around 110 delegates and speakers discussed the future of the offshore wind market and the implications for the emerging Norwegian supply chain. 

Contract for Wind Installation Vessel “Brave Tern”

A subsidiary of Fred. Olsen Windcarrier AS, which is indirectly owned 50/50 by Bonheur ASA and Ganger Rolf ASA, has on certain subjects entered into a contract for the specialized transport and installation vessel for offshore wind turbines “Brave Tern” Vestas Offshore Germany Gmbh .

The Italian Council of Minister to decide on the further development of the photovoltaic sector in Italy

On Thursday 3. March, the Italian Council of Ministers we be convened to decide about the Italian photovoltaic sector’s fate. A decree proposal on renewable energies, submitted by the Ministry of Economic Development, will be examined. 

INTPOW on the Road

Last week, the UK Carbon Trust launched a competition to find world-leading solutions to the problem of transferring engineers and equipment safely from boats to wind turbines as far as 300km offshore in up to 3 metre wave heights. The project aims to improve the economics of offshore wind by boosting revenues by as much as £3bn at a crucial time for the next generation of Round 3 offshore wind farms.

REC to shut Swedish module plant, lay off 300 workers

Norwegian solar-energy firm REC will close its 150MW module plant in Glava, Sweden, with 300 people expected to lose their jobs.

India to allocate developers for about 100 solar projects

India’s regulating authority on the licensing of solar plots in the country, the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, will start project allotment in September. More than 1,000 firms have expressed interest in about 100 projects of 5MW capacity each. The National Solar Mission is supported by government funding of $19bn and aims to generate 20GW of solar power into the national grid and 2GW for off-grid by 2022. 

French offshore wind tenders

France is going ahead with plans to tender 10 offshore wind sites with a capacity of up to 3GW in September, says the Energy Ministry.

Jon has almost 20 years of international investment banking and strategic advisory experience - appraising and advising projects and companies on corporate strategy and financial transactions. He has in-depth experience from the renewable energy industry.

Prior to joining INTPOW, Jon advised companies in the renewable energy industry on strategy, business development and financing and he was earlier with Scandinavian and global investment banks such as Handelsbanken Capital Market and Barclays de Zoete Wedd (London/Frankfurt). He is a Diplom-Kaufmann (MBA) from Friedrich - Alexander Universität in Nürnberg (Germany).
